Athletics' effort in comeback falls just short, lose 12-10

DELANO, MN - Delano was able to push the Shakopee Indians to their limits, but the Athletics' comback bid fell just short in the 12-10 loss Wednesday evening against the sixth ranked team in the most recent Class B rankings published by the Minnesota Baseball Association.

The Athletics fell behind quickly, allowing three runs in the first inning, including a two run home run.

Centerfielder Josh Hiltner scored the Athletics first run in the bottom of the third on a single by Jeff Althoff.

Shakopee would plate a run in the top of the fourth inning and would increase their lead to 4-1.

The Athletics would tie the game 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning with three runs. Adam Schleper led off the inning with a single, Josh Hiltner and Jeff Althoff both walked and the bases were loaded with 1-out. Jay Stevens singled to score Adam Schleper from third base and with the bases still loaded John Magee walked to score Jeff Althoff, followed by a game tying single to left-field by Jesse Berg.

After tossing five innings, starting pitcher Matt Arens was reliefed by rookie pitcher Jeremy Maschino.  Maschino would struggle in his first town team appearance entering the game in the sixth and walking four batters, allowing five runs before being relieved by Tyler Hannan. Hannan would finally get the Athletics out of the inning, but after all was said and done the Indians would score six runs and lead 10-4.

With the Athletics trailing 12-8 in the bottom of the ninth inning, they would string together a late rally, scoring two runs and falling two runs short of tying the game before losing 12-10.

Offensively the Athletics were led by Joey Althoff who finished the game 4-for-5 with 3 RBIs and Adam Schleper who finished the game 3-for-6 and 3 runs scored. The Athletics pitching staff issued a season high 11 walks and will get a much needed break after playinf four games in five days, finishing that stretch winning three of four.

The Athletics next game will be on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. to open the first round of the Cannon Falls Tournament versus the Pine Island Pioneers.
